Bradley Wiggins in action in Volta a Catalunya
Sir Bradley Wiggins takes to the start line of the Volta a Catalunya today (Monday, March 18) as he warms-up for an assault on the Giro d'Italia in May.
It's Wiggins second stage race outing in 2013 after he rode in the Tour of Oman in February. That particular race didn't go to plan for Wiggins after he was caught up in a late crash on the opening stage but was not awarded the same time as the stage winner. He ultimately finished the race in 74th place overall after helping team-mate Chris Froome to victory.
Wiggins will face stiff competition in the hilly race, with 2012 Giro winner Ryder Hesjedal, Daniel Martin (both Garmin-Sharp), 2010 Catalunya winner Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), 2009 winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Mreida), Robert Gesink (Blanco) and Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) all on the start list. Last year's winner, Michael Albasini (Origca-GreenEdge) is absent. Scarponi inherited the 2011 title from Alberto Contador after the latter was stripped of the win due to a positive test for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour de France.
Sky fields a strong team alongside Wiggins, with Rigoberto Uran, David Lopez, Dario Cataldo, Josh Edmondson, Peter Kennaugh, Christian Knees and Danny Pate. Uran has always done well in the race, finishing fifth overall last year and fourth in 2011.
British participants on the start list are Steve Cummings (BMC Racing), Andy Fenn (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), and the previously mentioned Wiggins, Edmondson and Kennaugh (all Sky).
The last - and only - British winner of the race was Robert Millar in 1985.
The 2013 edition of the seven-stage, WorldTour-level race kicks off with a hilly stage on Monday from Calella to Calella that could favour attacking riders, if they can keep the attentions of the sprinters' teams at bay.

Wednesday's third stage is the first big test for the climbers, featuring a mountain-top finish at Vallter 2000. The following day is even tougher, with a day of ups and downs in the high mountains culminating in an ascent of Port Aine, topping out at 1947 metres above sea level.
The three remaining stages offer less in the way of mountains and favour escapes or bunch finishes, and the race concludes with a short 122.2km stage to Barcelona on Sunday (March 24). There are no time trials.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
