Diego Ulissi wins Tour of Poland opener

Italian Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) took the opening stage of the 2013 Tour of Poland atop Madonna di Campiglio in Italy.
Ulissi won out of a select final group that had been whittled down on the tough final ascent. Colombian Darwin Atapuma (Colombia) came home in second, with Rafal Majka (Saxo-Tinkoff) in third.
Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) had led the charge up the final climb with a solo move but was reeled in by the chasers in the final few kilometres.
Bradley Wiggins (Sky), making his racing return after missing the Tour de France with knee injury, placed 58th on the stage, nine minutes and 13 seconds down on Ulissi. Wiggins' Sky team-mate Sergio Henao, third overall last year, was part of the lead group.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
