Ben Swift wins opening stage of Settimana Coppi e Bartali
Rotherham sprinter Ben Swift follows podium spot in Milan-San Remo with win in Italian stage race
Ben Swift (Team Sky) has continued his return to top form, winning the opening stage of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali race in Gatteo, Italy, on Thursday morning.
Swift took the victory ahead of Manuele Mori (Lampre-Merida) and Damiano Caruso (Cannondale). Sky's Peter Kennaugh placed eighth.
Swift's victory comes less than a week after he propelled himself to third place in Milan-San Remo; a stark contrast to his injury-blighted 2013 season which saw him come away with no major results.
Swift will take the race lead into this afternoon's 13.3km team time trial alongside Sky team-mates Ian Boswell, Dario Cataldo, Philip Deignan, Joe Dombrowski, Sebastian Henao and Peter Kennaugh.
The UCI 2.1-ranked Settimana Coppi e Bartali concludes on Sunday, March 30.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
