Michael Hutchinson first came to prominence in 1999 when he won the National Time Trial series. Since then the former human-rights lawyer has become one of the most prolific UK time-trial winners in the sport's history.
He has won over 30 national titles, including, in 2005, the first ever ‘grand slam' of titles: 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles, and 12 hours in the same season. He has won the national ten seven times and is unbeaten in the 50 mile championship in ten years.
'Hutch' also competes on the track - he was British 4000m pursuit champion in 2002, and in 2003 he tried (and failed) to break the World Hour Record, an attempt that became the focus of his award-winning book, The Hour.
He represented Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games of 2002 and 2006, where he finished fourth in the road time trial and sixth in the pursuit. He was fourth in the time trial in the 2010 Commonwalth Games.
He is a writer and journalist, and writes the Dr Hutch column for Cycling Weekly.
