Scot David Millar will have another chance to win the Giro d'Italia's pink jersey in the team time trial on Wednesday.
He sits six seconds behind leader Bradley Wiggins, close enough to strike according to Garmin-Transitions sports director, Matt White.
This morning, one day after the opening time trial, White said: "It is not out of the question for us to take the pink jersey in stage four."
Stage four is a 33-kilometre team time trial from Savigliano to Cuneo. Garmin is one of cycling's strongest teams in the discipline having won the team time trial at the Giro in 2008 although they were beaten by Columbia last year.
On paper, Garmin-Transitions have a formidable team time trial squad, although Team Sky will also be focusing on the stage. They are evenly matched. Garmin have the likes of Jack Bobridge and Cameron Meyer to back up Millar and Christian Vande Velde, while Team Sky have Michael Barry and Morris Possoni who were part of last year's winning Columbia squad.
Wiggins won the 8.4-kilometre time trial yesterday in Amsterdam, with Millar finishing seventh.
"I was a bit disappointed because I was hoping to be on the podium," Millar said of his ride. "I was going good, I was cornering very well, but obviously, I didn't have that all-out speed."
"I don't think he could have gone much faster, but I think it was too short for him," White added. "I think in the last years his prologue abilities have gone down some, but he is time trialling a lot better. Especially in stage races, when everyone is tired."
Millar won the final 27.8-kilometre time trial of the Vuelta a España last year. This year, he rode at the front of the Three Days of De Panne and secured the overall victory by winning the final 14.75-kilometre time trial. Those wins and his role in the 2008 Giro d'Italia team time trial win give Millar reason to dream.
"The pink jersey? It's still possible," Millar said. "I still have the team time trial."
