Yet another young talent brought through the GB Olympic Academy Programme, Steven Burke's specialisation is the team pursuit. Burke took his first medal at the 2005 European Junior Championships, again in the team pursuit.
Some were surprised when Burke was selected for the track ahead of Steve Cummings, but according to GB team director Dave Brailsford, Burke fully deserved his place, allowing Cummings to focus on the road race and the time trial.
Burke did not disappoint in Beijing, taking a bronze medal in the individual pursuit. A British title in the individual pursuit as well as a gold medal in the team pursuit at the Manchester Track World Cup rounded off what was an impressive season for Burke.
After spending the 2008 season preparing for the Olympics, Burke returned his focus to the road, where he currently represents the British Academy in Italy.
Preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games went well for Burke and his fellow GB team pursuiters, clinching the world title in Melbourne. In London, Burke put in some big turns at the front of the GB team pursuit quartet to set a new world record in the final and score gold.
On the road, Burke has been a part of various UK outfits. In 2011 he was with UK Youth, before spending 2012 with IG Sigma Sport, 2013 with Node 4-Giordana and agreed a contract with Haribo-Beacon for 2014.
