Matt Clinton wins third round of National Time Trial Series

Former national hill-climb champion Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) scored a two-second victory over reigning national hill-climb champion Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy CT) in the third round of the National Time Trial Series in Derbyshire on Good Friday.

Clinton, who won the title in 2008, clocked 1-23-23 for the 33-mile three-lap course near Longnor, while Pettinger was around a minute and a half quicker than third-placed Chris Fennell, the 18-year-old MPR @ Toachim House rider.

Clinton set off quickest, covering the first lap in 27-09, while Pettinger was 46 seconds slower, but by the end of the second circuit Pettinger had clawed it back and led by 15 seconds. However, Clinton pulled that back on the final lap to take a narrow victory.

In the women’s event there was a win for 20-year-old Katie Archibald who beat her Pearl Izumi-Sports Tours International team-mate Sarah Storey by 32 seconds, while Joanna Rowsell (Wiggle Honda) took third, 1-29 slower than Archibald. Round two winner Anna Turvey (Tyneside Vagabonds) finished just outside the podium in fourth.

Team Swift’s Andy Jackson won the City RC Hull Good Friday 10 on the V718 course in East Yorkshire, clocking 19-10 to win the event at South Cave by just two seconds.

The popular course saw 12 riders go under the 20-minute mark, with mark Arnold (CC Desiragear) taking second and Scott Burns (Manchester Wheelers) third. Ayse Vahiboglu (Exeter Wheelers) was best of the women in 22-21.

Adam Topham broke the course record for the P451 at Broadmayne in Dorset, clocking 20-03 to win the CC Weymouth 10 on Easter Saturday by 54 seconds from Jon Wynn (Northovers VT)

And it was Topham’s second win of the weekend following his victory in Good Friday’s High Wycombe CC 10 at Marlow in Buckinghamshire where he clocked 19-19.

There was a tie for top spot in the Bournemouth Arrow CC 10 at Ringwood in Hampshire on Good Friday, with Gary Dighton (Primera Sports) and Greg Parker (VC St Raphael) both covering the P311 course in exactly 22 minutes.

There was a different kind of Tye at the top elsewhere in Hampshire on Good Friday – Kevin Tye (VeloRefined Aerosmiths) winning the a3crg 10 at Petersfield with 20-13, seven seconds clear of team-mate Michael Barnes, while the promoting club’s Seb Ader was third, another two seconds back.

In Maisemore near Gloucester, Rob Pears (Bath CC) won the Gloucester City CC 25 on Saturday with a time of 54-33, which was more than a minute quicker than his nearest rival Tavis Walker (VC Walcot).

Welwyn Wheelers staged their hilly 50km time trial, and it was CC Luton’s Ashley Cox who took a convincing win. He clocked 1-10-57 for the course near Codicote in Hertfordshire, which was 4-22 quicker than Danny Axford (Arcit Tacx RT) in second place.

There was a comfortable win for David McGaw (Cambridge CC) in the Eastern Counties CA 25 near Chelmsford in Essex, where his time of 55-57 was 2-12 faster than runner-up Gray Turnock (Finsbury Park CC).

And Mid-Devon CC colleagues Peter Vincent and Conrad Moss finished first and second respectively in their club’s 23-mile event at Chudleigh. Vincent clocked 45-26, with Moss more than two minutes back with 47-38
