Luis Leon Sanchez wins opening stage of Tour of the Basque Country
Astana rider Luis Leon Sanchez pips fellow breakaway companion Daniel Navarro to win stage one of Tour of the Basque Country
Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) won the opening stage of the 2016 Tour of the Basque Country in Spain on Monday.
Sanchez had attacked with fellow Spaniard Daniel Navarro (Cofidis) on the final climb of the day. The pair built up a lead over the chasing pack on the descent and just about managed to evade them on the line.
It's Sanchez's second victory of the year after he won a stage of the Volta ao Algarve in February.
Had he been given an extra 10 metres, Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) would have taken the victory as he rapidly accelerated behind the lead duo. In the end, though, the Australian had to settle for third place.

The hilly stage featured eight classified climbs over its 144km route, which saw the peloton splinter into pieces and create large time gaps on the first day. The remnants of an early escape group were caught when Dario Cataldo (Astana) attacked with 30km to go.
Cataldo was subsequently reeled in, setting the scene for his team-mate Sanchez to take the victory and early race lead.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
