The much-anticipated showdowns on the Mont Ventoux and Galibier in the last two Tours have both been damp squibs, so ASO have gone back to the drawing board as they search for a way to give the GC a good shake-up just days before Paris.
The result is a potentially epic 109.5km route that takes in the Col du Télégraphe, the Galibier before finishing on the Alpe d'Huez. These three climbs, which total to nigh-on 45km of climbing, were last tackled in the same stage during the 2003 Tour.
