Thor Hushovd wins Tour of Beijing opening stage
Thor Hushovd (BMC Racing) took the bunch sprint at the end of the opening stage of the 2013 Tour of Beijing on Friday.
Luka Mezgec (Argos-Shimano) came home in second, with Nikolas Maes (Omega Pharma) in third.
The Norwegian road race champion's BMC squad had taken control of the peloton in the last 20 kilometres of the race, reeling in Sander Cordeel (Lotto-Belisol), the lone remnant of the day's four-man breakaway, with 5km to go.
Although BMC's lead in the peloton was lost in the final few kilometres as rival sprint teams jockeyed for pole position - notably Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge - Hushovd capitalised on their earlier work, lunging his bike over the line to take the early overall race lead.
Tomorrow (Saturday) the riders take on hilly stage two from Huairou Studio City to Yanqing, covering 202km and including four categorised climbs, three of them second category. The five-day race concludes on Tuesday, October 15.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
