At the 2010 Tour de France he was pipped to the yellow jersey by Fabian Cancellara as the Swiss rider beat him by ten seconds in the race's prologue.
As well as having ability against the clock, Martin can hold his own as a climber. If he manages to strengthen his climbing in order to limit damage received at the hands of the specialist climbers, he may be a possible grand tour contender of the future.
Before turning professional, he trained to be a policeman, and missed part of his first season at HTC in order to finish the qualification.
