Vote for Cavendish: BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Mark Cavendish's cycling season may have ended many weeks ago, but he faces one last challenge for 2011 - to win the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award tonight. Phone 09015 22 26 01 to vote for Cavendish.
The public will decide who should be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 during a live broadcast of the awards ceremony. The show will be aired on BBC One from 8pm to 10pm tonight (Thursday, December 22).
Cavendish made the SPOTY shortlist after becoming the first British rider to win the green jersey at the Tour de France and win the road race world championship title. Cavendish's full list of 2011 achievements are listed below, and few British sportspeople can boast such a success rate.
Although Cavendish is the bookmakers' front-runner to take the SPOTY title, a public vote can never be predicted and the result is far from a foregone conclusion. Every vote counts - your vote counts.
Golfer Darren Clarke is a very popular choice, and golf is arguably a much more popular sport than cycling out in the wider world. Hard to believe, we know.
The other nominees alongside Cavendish and Clarke are: Luke Donald (golf), Rory McIlroy (golf), Mo Farah (athletics), Dai Greene (athletics), Amir Khan (boxing), Andy Murray (tennis), Alastair Cook (cricket) and Andrew Strauss (cricket).
How do I vote for Cavendish?
To vote for Mark Cavendish, you simply dial the telephone number that the BBC allocates to the Manx sprint star during the live broadcast on BBC One at 8pm tonight.

Junior road race world champion Lucy Garner has made the final three of this year's Young Sports Personality of the Year and stands a good chance of taking the title tonight. The winner of this category is chosen by a judging panel, and not a public vote.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
