Swytch Bike e-bike conversion kit review: downsized battery, upsized fun

New, lighter version of the Swytch battery and mount make this already great e-bike conversion kit even better

Cycling Weekly Verdict

This is an improvement over the previous Swytch Universal eBike Conversion Kit, even if the range is reduced. However I think that the quoted range is on the conservative side... The change to a lighter, smaller battery has improved the bikes' dynamics - as well as aesthetics - and it is much easier to pop into a backpack when removed from the bike. It's well made and looks great too.

Reasons to buy
  • +

    Lighter and smaller battery

  • +

Upgradeable if you already have the system

  • +

    OLED display & controller

  • +

    Battery mount nicely made

Reasons to avoid
  • -

The placing of a front light needs some thought to work optimally

  • -

Might need to modify fork dropout width on a older frameset

Swytch has launched a new e-bike conversion kit that features a 700g battery that it says is similar in size to a large smartphone and will turn any bike into an electric bike

The new system upgrades Swytch's original Universal eBike Conversion Kit that I reviewed in March. It can be bought as a complete kit (front wheel with motor hub, mount, battery, sensor etc) or as and upgrade kit should you already own the previous version. The new battery and mount are the only changes to the kit - but they are substantial ones.

Over 40 years cycling in a variety of disciplines including road riding, commuting, a self-supported Land's End to John o' Groats trip, XC mountain biking and several Polaris Challenge two-day events. Adventure, escape and fun are the motivations for my riding. I also love bike and kit design and have fillet brazed a couple of framesets using Reynolds 853 steel tubing for myself. A very satisfying experience to ride your own bespoke bike!
