Cycling Weekly Verdict

Fast-rolling rubber that has become the benchmark gravel tyre. It's fast and unobtrusive on tarmac and capable on the trail too, providing things don't get too muddy too often. Plenty of volume equals comfort but the low-profile tread – the clue (SK = Small Knob) is in the name there – and very rounded, lightly treaded shoulder means you might find yourself lowering the pressure for extra off-road confidence. A very capable two or three-season tyre, depending on how your local trails ride.

As tyre brands go, Panaracer finds itself in a highly enviable position among the gravel set – it manufactures what is widely considered to be the benchmark tyre. A bit like the good old Continental GP series for road bikes, they're not necessarily everyone's favourites, but they're rated by many and few riders haven't tried one.

Tyre comparisons on forums and group rides will usually circle back to 'how does it compare to a GravelKing?'.

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.
